Gray Microtopping and Glass Enhance Concrete Patio

The owners of this oceanfront home in Ocean Beach, Calif., had great design aspirations for their new concrete patio. Install curvilinear depressions that could be filled with colored glass tiles. Incorporate an elegant curved concrete bench for seating. And as a focal point, add a large concrete fire bowl. But after the concrete for the new patio was poured, the homeowners realized that more work was needed to achieve their design goals. “The newly poured concrete was too rough and hard to keep clean. The owner wanted something darker, smoother and easier to maintain,” says Brian Oberman of Suncoast Concrete Coatings Inc., a specialist in decorative concrete coatings, staining, sealing, and concrete polishing.

Installation of a smooth charcoal-gray microtopping was all that was needed to transform the patio from bland to grand. The dark gray made the perfect backdrop for the ocean-blue glass tile, which runs like rivulets through the patio and encircle the fire bowl. As an added decorative touch, Suncoast used a custom-colored acrylic sealer to enhance the concrete stepping stones leading to the patio, using shades of blue and green to complement the glass. The concrete bench was also colored to match the patio.

Materials used:
