A stampable overlay is only as good as the surface beneath it. In addition to cleaning the concrete, repairing cracks, and ensuring the slab is structurally sound, always follow the overlay manufacturer’s concrete surface profile (CSP) guidelines, whether that means a light mechanical profile or more aggressive abrasion. Many overlay failures trace back to inadequate surface preparation, not the topping itself.
Harris stresses that “more is better” when it comes to labor and stamp quantity. Because the working window for a stampable overlay is short, make sure you have ample stamps or texture skins and a sufficiently staffed crew so the team can work in rhythm and stay ahead of the overlay as it begins to set. Good planning also prevents rushed stamping, which is one of the most common causes of uneven impressions and pattern inconsistencies.
Accurate coverage calculations are essential, but even the best estimates can be thrown off by slab undulations and unexpected thickness variations. That’s why experienced installers often order at least 10% extra material beyond the calculated coverage. This buffer helps prevent the possibility of running short mid-installation, a mistake that can ruin the entire job, since there’s no way to hide a cold joint in a stampable overlay.
