Few concrete pavements experience more punishment than those at the drive-thru area of a fast-food restaurant. Nearly around the clock, they experience a constant onslaught of food spills, leaking vehicle fluids, tire marks, road salt and abrasion. Dunkin’ Donuts franchise owner Bruce Thomas of Tauntan, Mass., was tired of the constant abuse and the toll it took on his drive-thru. Finally, he sought out a permanent solution and turned for help to Redi-Mix Colors & Sealers, a local company specializing in concrete sealers, hardeners, stains and cleaners.

“We took on this challenge from Mr. Thomas and went to work,” says Redi-Mix Colors CEO Mark Hampston. After extensive research and development, the company introduced the Concrete Protection Process (CPP), a patent-pending system specifically developed to mitigate concrete staining from vehicle fluids and drink spills while providing abrasion resistance from vehicle tire traffic. Applications not only include drive-thrus at quick-serve restaurants, pharmacies, convenience stores and banks, but also any other business that has concrete areas subject to staining from vehicle traffic. “The applications for CPP are endless for indoor and outdoor areas,” says Hampston. “It is ideal for concrete parking decks and other areas with slow-speed traffic, loading-dock ramps, and pedestrian walkways.”

How to installCPP can be applied to both new and existing concrete in a four-step process. First, clean the surface thoroughly with Redi-Mix Colors’ eco-friendly Clean & Etch and a degreaser, if needed. Next, cover the surface with the system’s specially formulated black stain, which will help to hide any existing discoloration. This is followed by application of a deep-penetrating sealer, which protects from water intrusion from the bottom up and serves as a bonding agent for the wear-resistant topcoat, which is applied in the final step, along with an abrasion-resistant grit.

CPP was installed by Business Flooring Specialists.

“The wear coat surfacing in combination with the abrasion-resistant product applied in two coats will provide years and years of wear life for most surfaces. The application generally takes two days to complete, from cleaning to final coat, and the surface can take traffic 24 hours later,” says Hampston.

Although black is currently the only color option, new colors may be introduced later this year.
