The Decorative Concrete Council, a specialty council of the American Society of Concrete Contractors, St. Louis, Mo., has announced the winners of its eighth annual awards competition. The winners were recognized at a ceremony at the World of Concrete, Las Vegas, on Tuesday, February 2, 2016. Below is a collection of the first place projects.

Baker Concrete Construction in Ft. Lauderdale, FL

DCC WOW! Award Winner: The USF Polytechnic 555 Building

Led by Santiago Calatrava and Festina Lente, this innovative design in architectural concrete uses an elliptical structure highlighted with exposed concrete raker portals. The main building’s architectural concrete began with 142 column portals spaced at 8 feet on center using a curving layout. The shape of these portals required triangular bracing between the two columns, using self-consolidating concrete to monolithically pour. The two main entrances began with perimeter architectural columns connected with 16 unique raker portals. The portals support the roof and combine into an oval skylight that illuminates the entry, which is composed of polished concrete stairs.
