Filling Random Cracks in a Floor

Hotline Problem

We just completed building a large warehouse floor. The 6-inch thick slab was jointed every 15 feet to control cracking. However, at a few columns that werent properly isolated we got some random cracks. These cracks have opened up about 1/8 inch so theyre acting like control joints. Should we rout them out and fill the gap with an epoxy to bond the surfaces back together? The cracks are in an area that will get hard-wheel forklift traffic.

Troubleshooting Response

Steve Metzger of Metzger/McGuire recommends against routing the crack unless it has already started to chip at the edges. A wider crack simply gives more wheel exposure. It the crack has squared sides (crack is perpendicular to the surface), routing shouldnt be needed. He also recommends against bonding the surfaces back together. If the crack is acting as a joint and you glue it together, youre likely to get another crack in the same area.
