At the 2007 World of Concrete, Clark Branum with Brickform, demonstrated the use of Brickform's Micro-Topping, a very lightweight, thin coating that can be colored or stained.

According to Branum, "Brickform's Micro-Topping can be applied over nearly any surface including drywall, hardyboard, or a concrete wall. With drywall, you just have to be sure the seams are taped so the surface is smooth."

At the World of Concrete demo, Branum rolled on one coat of Micro-Topping Regular Grade (RG). "Some people prefer to shoot it with a hopper gun," explains Branum, "but I prefer to roll it on. To apply the Micro-Topping, it needs to be wet enough to trowel. Right after it is rolled on, you can trowel it to knock it flat. Then within 30 minutes, it should be dry. Next, you come back over the application with a Smooth Grade (SG). Roll it on and skip trowel it to create a texture on the wall. Then you can acid stain or dye it."

For demonstration purposes, Branum used Brickform's Dye and Seal which he says is good for interior applications but not exterior. "The dye and seal is not UV stable," he explains. Branum spray-applied the dye, and says, "Dyes dry fast and will mottle in the texture to create depth of color." He also adds, "If you're doing reactive stain, start from the bottom up so you don't get obvious drip marks. Some people also sponge apply."

Branum recommends sealing with a water-based sealer because of the low sheen. "A glossy sealer reflects too much light," he says. "They're too glossy on vertical applications and can wash out a room." Branum spray-applied the sealer, and wiped with a rag to prevent dripping. He also says an HVLP could be used to fog on the sealer.

Micro-Topping RG dries to a semi-rough texture which is useful for pool decks and other exterior applications where slip-resistance may be necessary. For a smoother look, Micro-Topping SG can be applied. No primer is required, and the Micro-Topping is available in a white or standard gray mix, combined with Brickform's liquid polymer at the rate of 2 bags per pail.
