Paver Base Compaction RequirementsCompaction is done in 4" lifts to achieve the maximum density and load bearing capacity. Each layer will require several passes with the compacting equipment to achieve this. Compaction should be at least 95% Proctor density (per ASTM D 698) for pedestrian areas and residential driveways. For areas subjected to vehicular traffic, compact to at least 95% Modified Proctor Density (per ASTM D 1557). Weak or saturated soils may not reach the minimum levels of density and may have to be stabilized or require drainage to remove excess water.
