Tilt-Up Related Products

Many of the products used in tilt-up construction, other than the lifting and bracing hardware, are adapted from standard concrete construction or from precast construction. TCA has a list of tilt-up product suppliers that are available from their members. Here are a few of the more important products and companies in the business:

  • Tilt-up hardware: The various anchors and inserts needed for lifting and bracing the panels are positioned prior to concrete placement. Note that lifting hardware and bracing hardware are different. This is very specialized and few structural engineers have the experience to efficiently design and specify the lifting and bracing hardware and the braces for tilt-up panels. The major suppliers, Dayton/Richmond and Meadow Burke, have certified dealers and will design the hardware for their customers. Other suppliers are Don De Cristo and Universal Form Clamp. White Cap represents most of the manufacturers and offers an estimating package (Panel-Pro)—finding anything on their web site, however, is difficult.

  • Insulation: Composite Technologies Corp (Boone, IA) developed the first sandwich panel system for tilt-up including glass fiber reinforced connectors to tie concrete wythes together without creating a thermal bridge. Owens Corning also supplies insulation and Lite-Deck has adapted their insulation panels that have been used to form floors for buildings using insulating concrete forms (ICFs). Exterior insulation and finishing systems (EIFS), such as Dryvit, have also been used on the exterior of tilt-up buildings.

Tilt-Up Process

  • Side forms and door/window bucks: Nothing too unusual with these forms, other than that they are often used multiple times and also panels are often stack cast, which requires two-panel-high jump forms.
  • Cranes: Sizing cranes for lifting panels should be done by your engineer or form designer.
  • Pumps/conveyors for delivering concrete: Prior to beginning construction, consider where this equipment will be positioned.
