I was talking with Wayne Sellon, owner of Tajmawall. Tajmawall's work focuses on the vertical surfaces of interior and exterior walls. Materials are applied by trowel or shot on with a pump then stamped and carved for unique rock-look walls (see Tajmawall's featured project article). Although Tajmawall blends its own proprietary mix and makes its own carving tools, they still buy materials and equipment. Here are five of owner Wayne Sellon's favorite concrete products:

Flex-C-Ment overlay stains

(www.flex-c-ment.com):
Sellon likes these stains because "they are the nicest colors, the most mellow, the most realistic." He notes, however, that he usually mixes a little pigment in to get the exact color he wants. Find Vertical Concrete Mixes and Stamps

PigmentSellon recommends an inexpensive and concentrated pigment he buys at Home Depot in pint bottles. (The brand he buys is made by a company called Pro-Line-not related to Proline stamping tools. I was unable, however, to find a link to that company and the guys in the paint department at my local Home Depot didn't know what I was talking about.) "They only carry four colors," Sellon says, "raw umber, burnt umber, yellow oxide, and lamp black. We often add some of those to our overlay stains to get just the right hue or shade."

Marshalltown trowels

"For the tools we don't make ourselves," says Sellon, "we use Marshalltown trowels. They make a real quality trowel." Find Trowels and Concrete Tools

Matcrete stamps

(www.matcrete.com):
Sellon recommends these stamps, especially their wall stamps. Find Concrete Stamps and Skins

Machine Technologies mortar pump

(http://machine-technologies.com/):
For applications where Tajmawall sprays concrete, Sellon recommends the P-25 mortar pump from Machine Technologies. "I'm skeptical about pumps because they can be a nightmare," he says." I own two plaster pumps. They are difficult to clean up and with the cheaper ones you have to water the material down to get it through the pump. With the P-25 you can dump right out of a mortar mixer into the hopper. It has an agitator in the hopper to keep the material stirred up and an electric motor which is nice since one of the problems with pumps through the years has been that the vibration of the motor will settle out the aggregate and clog the hose. This one has a 220-volt, 5-horsepower 3-phase motor that you can plug into a dryer outlet." Concrete Pump Information

Machine Technologies' pumps are ideal for applying concrete to vertical surfaces.
