Step It Up a Notch: Innovative Ideas
for Concrete Stairways

Stamped concrete stairway
Dear Jim,

Concrete is by far the most versatile material for building outdoor stairways, permitting shapes and decorative treatments simply not possible with wood, brick or stone. Concrete steps can be curved or rectangular, given a variety of edge treatments, and be stamped and colored to create eye-catching entryways. But don't stop there. The concrete stairways shown here take creativity one "step" further and showcase innovative ways you can make your stairs rise above the rest.

Built-in step lights

Light the way

For safety as well as ambience, entryways should be well lit at night -- and that often means installing more than a dim light fixture above the front door. You can also provide path lighting by casting built-in light fixtures right into the faces of concrete steps. Learn more about safety considerations for concrete steps.

Corner steps

Tuck them in a corner

Consider tucking concrete steps leading up to an L-shaped patio into a corner rather than along the edge. They'll take up less room, and the curved faces provide a nice contrast with the patio's straight lines.

Circular stairway

Go full circle

Think outside the box by making your steps circular instead or rectangular. The look is softer and more inviting, and the steps are easily accessible from any direction.

Stone-like step faces

Replicate natural cut stone

Textured liners designed specifically for use with step forms make it possible to mold rustic cut-stone profiles in step faces. These easy-to-use reusable liners are made from polyurethane and are simply attached to the inside of the riser form before the concrete is poured. Skateboard steps

Have some fun

Concrete steps on wheels? These oversized skateboard steps were replicated in solid concrete, wheels and all, for a youth center where skateboarding is king. Have some fun with your own concrete stairways, and create the unexpected.
