Dear Jim,
Perhaps the most desirable feature of polished concrete is the endless array of decorative options you have at your disposal to add extra dimension to your polishing projects. Many contractors like to infuse their floors with color.by applying stain or dye. But that's just the beginning. Other popular methods for enhancing polished concrete include decorative scoring and engraving, using adhesive stencils to create logos or graphic designs, and embedding aggregates and other decorative elements in the floor. Regardless of the method you use, you'll want to experiment with the products and application sequence first to ensure that you get the desired results. Here are some ideas to inspire your creativity.

Decorative scoring and stenciling
With a little creativity, decorative score cuts can transform your floors from a blank canvas to works of art. Another way to apply one-of-a-kind decorative designs to polished floors is to use adhesive-backed stencils, which can be custom fabricated to create personalized logos or graphics. Jim Cuviello of Complete Decorative Concrete Solutions used decorative sawcuts enhanced by concrete stains and polishing to create this colorful sun on the floor of a tanning salon. Adding color with stains and dyes
Concrete stains and solvent- or water-based dyes can bring your polished floor to life, whether used alone or to accent decorative score cuts or stenciled designs. Depending on the intricacy of the design, application tools can range from small paint brushes or sponges to pump sprayers and microfiber mops. When it comes to applying densifier to concrete that will be stained or dyed, the timing differs, says Bob Harris, author of Bob Harris' Guide to Polished Concrete Floors. With acid stain, it's best to apply densifier to the floor after applying the acid stain because the densifier could inhibit the penetration and reaction of the stain. Dyes can be applied after you have densified because they penetrate readily.

Embedded embellishments
Everything from exotic decorative aggregates to unusual items, such as scraps of metal and broken glass, can be embedded in concrete floors and then revealed by polishing. You can further enhance the look by embedding the objects in integrally colored concrete.
