Bright Ideas for Using White Concrete
|

Dear Jim,
Not all cement used in concrete is gray. For decorative concrete, using white portland cement in place of the standard gray variety allows for brighter, richer colors to be achieved when pigments are added. But many contractors prefer not to add color at all and leave the concrete a bright, gleaming white. Indoors, white concrete countertops, sinks, fireplace surrounds and furniture can make a dramatic design statement with their ultra-modern, pristine look. They work beautifully in minimalist settings and act as neutral backdrops for bolder color palettes. In kitchens and bathrooms, white concrete countertops and vanities offer a sleek porcelain-like look without coming across as sterile and industrial. See these examples of the beauty of white concrete for a variety of applications. For more information about the applications for white cement, download the report What Is White Cement? from the Portland Cement Association.

Fireplace surrounds
The platinum fireplace surround, featured in a Parade of Homes project in Grand Rapids, Mich., was created using a titanium-white pigment. It's made in three pieces, including two side panels with 45-degree angles that blend with 45-degree angles on the top horizontal piece. Read more about this project.

Sinks
This 80- x 24-inch white concrete vanity with bowl-style sinks was cast in place and given a hard- trowel finish and slightly honed top. It's the perfect complement for the dark walnut base and mirror frames. See another great example of a sink and backsplash made with white concrete.
