Our Top Residential Projects of 2009

 |
Greetings!
Last year, concrete contractors from across the country submitted dozens of their most creative residential projects for us to share with Concrete Network visitors. You can find descriptions and photos of all these projects on our website, but those profiled here happen to be a few of our favorites. They are great representations of what you can do with decorative concrete in and around the home, from an oval kitchen island to a river-themed floor overlay, from a Korean-inspired soaking tub to a terraced garden. If you decide to transform your home this year with decorative concrete, be sure to share the results with us (see details on the left). Who knows? Your project may end up on our list of favorites for 2010.

1. Concrete Driveway Has 'Hawaiian Eye' Appeal Located in Haiku, on the Hawaiian Island of Maui, this home features a spectacular concrete driveway and other hardscaping with the look and texture of the natural lava rock indigenous to the area. But this lava did not come from the island's legendary Haleakala volcano; instead, it came straight out of a concrete mixer.

2. Concrete Island Warms Up a Contemporary Kitchen The owners of this contemporary kitchen liked the oval "racetrack" shape
of their existing kitchen island, but wanted to give it more drama. Their
designer recommended concrete as the ideal material. The concrete island accommodates a drop-in stainless steel cooktop and undermount
sink, and it features a striking 6-inch drop edge that could only be achieved with cast concrete.

3. Terraced Garden Celebrates the Softer Side of Concrete When Victor Amador of Soft Concrete was hired to landscape this backyard garden
in Point Richmond, Calif., he was given complete creative freedom by the homeowner. The result is an elaborate terraced landscape sculpted by winding concrete stairways and
curved retaining walls stained in warm earth-tone colors.

4. River Runs Wild
A project that started out as a basic black and white basement floor overlay transformed
into something much bigger, a beautiful decorative stamped floor complete with embedded river rocks to mimic a stream, glow-in-the-dark aggregate running down the sides of a faux river
bed, and large stepping stones on either side.

5. Korean Bathhouse Blends Function with Design Inspired by frequent travels to Korea, a homeowner in Monterey, Calif., decided to replicate a Korean bathhouse as her guest house. The custom project included an Asian soaking tub, concrete wall and floor tiles, and a concrete sink.
