Easy Ways to Improve the Slip Resistance of Decorative Concrete Floors

Greetings!

Stamped concrete floorAll hard flooring surfaces, including concrete, can become slippery when wet. In high-traffic areas, especially in entryways, kitchens and retail facilities, there are several ways you can make concrete floors more slip resistant without detracting from their beauty. In fact, some of these techniques can even enhance the look of the floor. On polished concrete, you can apply an anti-slip conditioner to improve traction. If you plan to seal the floor, you can simply mix an "invisible" grit additive into the sealer before it's applied. You can also improve slip resistance by applying a textured or stamped decorative overlay. Learn more about these options for making concrete floors safer underfoot.

Polished floor

Use an Anti-Slip Conditioner
Polished concrete floors are really no slicker than plain concrete surfaces, and they are certainly safer than waxed linoleum or polished marble. But for floors in public facilities, you can improve traction and make wet surfaces safer by treating polished concrete with anti-slip conditioners. Watch this video for more details.

Polymer grit additive

Add a Clear Grit to the Sealer
Several manufacturers sell a grit that can be added to the final sealer coat to increase  traction. Many of these products are made from micro-fine polymers, so you can add texture without marring the decorative appearance. Two such products are Scofield Traction Additive from L.M. Scofield, and SharkGrip from H&C Concrete Products.

Patterned overlay

Apply a Textured Overlay
Many types of floor overlays can stamped, textured, or stenciled to add decorative interest while also improving slip resistance. Read more about the types of floor overlays and the decorative options available.
