10 Questions to Ask Before Hiring a Decorative Concrete Contractor
|
Hi ,
Because decorative concrete is a customized, hand-crafted product, the skill of the artisan doing the work will make all the difference between an average job and a sensational one. At the very least, you should ask to see a portfolio of the contractor's work. However, no contractor is going to show you pictures of projects that went wrong. That's why you also need to ask the following questions before you sign on the dotted line. A reputable concrete contractor will be happy to provide the answers!

1. Is the contractor fully insured and bonded, and licensed to do work in your state? Find out if a contractor is licensed.
2. If being environmentally friendly is important to you, ask if the contractor uses green materials and methods, such as eco-friendly concrete mixes.
3. Ask to view a variety of pieces the contractor has completed, either on display in their showroom or installed locally. This will help you visualize the unlimited design options possible with decorative concrete.
4. Ask about the background of the company and the experience of its owners. In addition to knowing about concrete, do they have engineering, architectural or interior design experience?
5. Ask if the contractor uses off-the-shelf molds or makes their own. Concrete mold making is a complex process, and makes a big difference in the outcome of the product.
6. Ask what the contractor has created that was truly "out of the box." This will give you a good sense of the contractor's creative ability.
7. Ask about the sealing process the contractor uses. Proper sealing is important, both to protect the concrete and make it easier to maintain. Read more about maintaining and sealing concrete.
8. Does the contractor install its own products, rather than subcontracting out the installation?
9. Will the contractor provide a written estimate, and what details will it include? The price should represent all the work necessary, with no extra fees attached. If change orders are to be made, they should be documented with your approval.
10. Ask for a proper contract with all of the legal jargon spelled out so you know you are protected and are aware of possible loopholes.
