Top Five Creative Outdoor Living Themes
|
Hi ,
From being shipwrecked on a South Seas island to visiting a romantic
palace in Spain, you can create a backyard getaway that transports you to a different time or place thanks to the versatility of concrete. Here we've selected five of the most creative outdoor projects that contractors have submitted to ConcreteNetwork.com. We hope they stimulate your imagination and show you the unlimited possibilities with decorative concrete.

1. Shipwrecked Island
|
With a little creativity and a lot of concrete, you can
bring the experience of being on a shipwrecked island to your backyard. "It has a Robinson Crusoe or Lost TV show theme, with
the idea that the family was out boating and crashed into the
rocks," says designer Scott Cohen of The Green Scene. A highlight of this Swiss Family Robinson paradise is a wood-stamped concrete boat that serves double duty as a spa.

2. Moorish Palace in Paradise
|
This dramatic poolscape was inspired by a trip the homeowners took to Alhambra, a 13th century Moorish palace in Spain. To evoke a similar romantic Mediterranean appeal, award-winning design/build firm Land Design Texas installed a three-tiered pool
with a round spa at the top and a midlevel pool that spills 5 feet over a vanishing edge. Pool deck surfaces use colored concrete with a rock-salt finish. |
3. Roman Ruins
|
The backyard challenge on this project was to recreate the look of an ancient Roman aqueduct. Scale
was the biggest issue, says designer Richard Winget of
Authentic Environments. "We did not want it to become too overpowering.
You will also notice the shape of the pool is curvilinear while the
ruin walls are symmetrical. Making the two work together was a real
challenge." |
4. Resort-like Living
|
When these New Jersey homeowners contacted Mike Hilton, owner of Hilton
Concrete, for their backyard project, they described their dream of a multilevel, circular patio, an idea inspired by a trip to a resort. The project includes
multiple tiers of concrete that create five distinct
outdoor rooms, including areas for dining, a bar, and a fire pit. There's also a shallow water feature incorporating benches and footrests. |
5. Tiki Bar
|
Two limiting factors called for creative thinking for this small backyard patio:
cost and space. Jerry Panico of Ultimate Design of New York came up with this clever Tiki bar theme, including a stamped concrete patio made to look like natural stone, a small above-ground pool, and a kitchen
area with a built-in BBQ, refrigerator and sink. | |
