Greetings!
Columns are common on the porches and entryways of many homes, serving both as a support system and architectural feature. But if those columns are made of wood, it's a good bet they will eventually rot if left unprotected. Why not offer your clients something more permanent, such as decorative concrete columns that will last just as long as their concrete walkways and patios? Recently, we learned about a new forming system that lets you easily cover up existing wood columns with cast-in-place concrete. Another option is to install brand new columns made of architectural precast concrete or to retrofit existing columns with precast concrete "surrounds." Learn more about these rot-proof, no-need-to-paint column alternatives.

Cast New Columns Right Over Wood
The Column Cast system from Column Form Technology is a form with a Styrofoam liner that wraps around existing wood columns so you can encapsulate them with fresh concrete. After the concrete cures, you strip away the form to reveal a new column in whatever decorative shape you choose, including square, fluted, round or octagonal. Best of all, the forms are reusable.

Install Architectural Precast Columns
Architectural precast concrete is the perfect medium for producing decorative columns customized to enhance any architectural style. Often they are made from "cast stone," a type of precast concrete that combines the strength and durability of reinforced concrete with the appearance of natural stone. The columns can be formed in almost any shape imaginable. You can also choose different finishes, ranging from smooth and fine-grained to pebble-like textures. Learn more about precast concrete architectural accents.

Go Retrofit
Although concrete architectural accents are typically used for new construction, pieces are also available for retrofit applications. For example, Lucioni Arts of Seattle produces two-piece precast concrete "surrounds" that can be used to encase existing columns or posts.
