Is That Concrete Patio Worth Fixing?

Crack repair

Not all existing concrete is a suitable candidate for an overlay, stain or other decorative treatment .The concrete must be structurally sound, without gapping cracks, severe delamination, or an unstable subbase. If you encounter these problems on a job, total replacement of the patio may be the homeowner's best option.

If the surface is in sound condition, with only minor cracks and discoloration, you still need to go through the steps of cleaning, surface preparation and crack repair. Although time consuming, proper  surface prep will help to ensure good results.

Four Great Ideas for Rejuvenating Existing Concrete Patios

Hi  ,

Patio resurfacingWith summer upon us, homeowners are spending more time in their backyards, enjoying their concrete patios. But that enjoyment is dampered if that patio is in dire need of a makeover! Now is the season when homeowners scrutinize their old, plain gray concrete with a critical eye and start thinking about ways to upgrade the appearance. There are several techniques you can use to help them achieve a stunning new look without ripping out the existing patio and starting over. See these four ideas for giving drab concrete slabs more color and eye appeal, and turning that concrete patio into an inviting retreat.

1. Warm up the color by applying a stain.

2. Engrave patterns into the concrete.
Red brick engravingWith concrete engraving, you use special tools and equipment to carve patterns into existing concrete, from brick and cobblestone designs to custom graphics. When the concrete is further enhanced by staining, the decorative effects are truly impressive. See Concrete Engraving Transforms Existing Concrete.

3. Resurface the concrete with an overlay.
Patio overlayResurfacing concrete with a decorative overlay or microtopping is a perfect way to completely cover up ugly flaws and discoloration and give existing patios a fresh, new surface enhanced by color, pattern, and texture. What's more, when applied properly, overlays can be as durable or even stronger than the concrete they are bonded to. 4. Apply a stenciled design.
Stenciled outdoor rugFrom faux concrete rugs to brick borders, almost any design you can imagine is possible with concrete stencils. Stencil templates come in hundreds of standard and custom motifs. They are designed to adhere to existing concrete while you fill in the pattern with colored skim coats, stains or dyes.
