Polishing Q&A
Q: Do I have to invest in two separate floor grinders for wet and dry polishing?

A: No. Many manufacturers offer machines that can handle both methods. They are equipped with a water tank and water feed system for wet grinding as well as a port for attachment to a dust extractor when working dry, such as this machine from Concrete Polishing Solutions.

Cool Tools: Hand-Held
Dustless Grinders
Dustless hand-held grinders are great for polishing floor edges and other tight spots. A shroud surrounding the diamond cup wheel suctions up all the airborne dust. Compact versions of these tools can also be used for smaller concrete surfaces, such as countertops.

Choosing a Polishing Method:
Wet or Dry?

Hi  ,

You can polish concrete to a brilliant shine using wet or dry grinding methods. Although each has its advantages, many contractors prefer dry polishing. In this issue, you'll learn why, and get advice on how to determine which approach is appropriate for a particular project. On some jobs, a combination of both methods will be the best solution.

A primer on wet and dry polishing
Total Polish Solutions, Knoxville, TN Dry polishing is faster, more convenient,
and more environmentally friendly than wet polishing, but you will need to use a containment system to collect the dust. With wet polishing, water eliminates the dust, but then you must clean up and dispose of the concrete slurry.

Here's an overview of each process.

Polishing floors to a shine, without the dust
Propane polisher When shopping around for a floor polisher, look for a machine capable of extracting about 99% of the dust (many of today's models do). This will keep the worksite clean and the air quality safe.

See this example of a propane-powered machine from Eagle Solutions, which has a built-in vacuum to capture dust particulates.
