Los Angeles Lakers may three peat- Diamond D Concrete already has

Diamond D Concrete was awarded the Best Patène Artectura project/Flatwork -Gold Award for LaHonda House on March 22, 2002 in St. Louis, MO. at Bomanite's International Conference, marking three years of consecutive wins. The award-winning project is located in LaHonda, California and features a mixture of Patène Artectura, Micro-Top and Bomanite Con-Color.

Most years Pettigrew takes his entire crew to the Bomanite's International Conference. "A lot of why I submit my work for these awards is to honor my crew and let them see the tangible results of their work. They are rewarded by more than just a paycheck and this gives them a sense of pride- they can see themselves as artists versus concrete finishers."

Diamond D Company, located in Watsonville, California, provides an array of concrete services including decorative concrete, countertops, engraving, demolition, pool decking, staining, driveways, pavers, and cleaning services.

When Pettigrew was a kid he loved to draw all kinds of artistic designs, primarily interesting geometric shapes, which he would color in and then use to cover his textbooks. Today he applies this passion to concrete, creating unique, brilliant pieces of art on floors, driveways, countertops — anything concrete. "I've always loved this miracle material that you can mold into whatever you want," Pettigrew said.

His interest in special interior floors started ten years ago when he first saw acid stained floors. "Since then, I have been devoted to learning everything possible about interior floors. I don't think I will every stop learning."

Pettigrew says his favorite project of all time is the La Honda house, for which he was awarded the Best Patène Artectura project/Flatwork -Gold Award. Pettigrew was basically given free reign on the project. It took six weeks to color the 6,000 square feet of floors after three full days of scoring the designs. Concrete runs throughout the house — in the floor of the guestroom, in a back bedroom, in a shower surround, on the countertop of the master bedroom, and in the master bath and shower. "Everyone who comes in the house can't believe it's concrete," Pettigrew said.

The kitchen is graced with beautiful mahogany-colored concrete countertops. The kitchen floor resembles a stunning piece of artwork, resplendent in rich hues of amber, gold, and sage thoughtfully arranged in interesting, interlocking shapes. A swath of the brown color matching the countertops accentuates the floor design.

In the dining room, a redwood-colored, picnic-style table sits atop an amber-colored floor, accented with dark-colored diamonds, almost resembling a checkerboard.

Pettigrew believes his best work is yet to come, "In the last couple of years I have learned of new products that have been on the market for some time, been involved in the development of several new products, and there have been many new product introductions that open the color possibilities wide open."

The Bomanite judging panel includes management from the corporate office (VP Technical Services, VP Plant Operations, Director of Operations, Chief Operating Officer, Member from BGI - international operations, and Managing Director for BGI). This year there were a total of 55 entries submitted from 21 different Bomanite licensees around the globe (including Canada, Philippines, Malaysia, Korea, China, United Kingdom, and the United States).

Evaluations are based on the slides, project descriptions and supporting materials submitted with each entry. The judging is equally based on 1) overall aesthetics, 2) creative use of Bomanite/ Bomacron/ Patène Artectura/Micro-Top/Thin-Set, 3) quality of installation and 4) technical difficulty.
