In 1996, Texas got a welcome addition to its contractor repertoire when Thomas Jagger set up shop in Dallas and Austin. The result is the wildly creative and successful Jagger Scored Stained Concrete, Inc. (JSSC).

JSSC provides custom concrete installations and specializes in decorative concrete applications and small architectural projects. They have successfully completed thousands of projects including floors, countertops, backsplashes, sinks from molds, custom sinks, flatwork, patios, driveways, walls, ceilings, showers, stair treads and landings, water features, fountains, planters, fire pits, troughs, dining room tables, board room tables, bar tables, desks, fireplace surrounds, hearths, mantels, sills, lintels, pool decks, furniture, pedestals, columns and art.

JSSC has had jobs in Hawaii, California, New York, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Wyoming and, of course, Texas. "We go anywhere to do a job," Jagger says. "We're actually located in Dallas and Austin, but we travel from both locations. Probably 15 percent of our gross is travel. We like to get out of town. It breaks the monotony."

Almost 20 percent of JSSC's current portfolio is concrete countertops, with the Dallas area generating the most requests. "I think they're becoming more and more popular," Jagger observes. "And it seems like scoring is coming back for floors. In the last few years, we've done a lot of color, but not so much scoring. I don't know if its an economic deal or personal preference, but were doing more score jobs these days."

"Here in Texas, the economy is coming back," he continues. "So we're seeing some bigger homes starting now that have just been laying around the architects office for the past few years. And they do the cool projects that they can get us involved in, so we love that."

Among those cool projects are two driveways, one for a private residence helicopter pad in Lakeway that was over 8,000 square feet of concrete infused with a burnished orange color and treated with a rock salt finish before a 25-foot sun design was stained over the top in red and black; the other was a private residence in Tyler, where four approaches, each a gold color edged in a red border, met in a black 1,500-square-foot center piece with a 20-foot sun, half red and half gold, sitting as a directional compass in all, over 24,000 square feet of concrete.

Then there's a 10-foot by 15-foot pond JSSC created for a home in Austin. The pond sits adjacent to the home and enters a glass-enclosed alcove, and since its level with the interior floor, it gives the illusion of entering the space and brings the relaxing sounds of running water right into the home.

Other unique works include two table designs, one, which came about while trying out a radius cutter, has a beautiful 4-foot artichoke-type flower design on it, stained in various shades of green. Then there's the JSSC concrete and steel dining room table, which incorporates hammered steel frames that are powder coated with a rebar inset, which are then welded before concrete is poured into them. Then they are hand-finished with a burn finish and sealed before four small halogen lights from Belgium are added.

JSSC also has their work on display in the Design Center in Austin. As for how Jagger got there, he recalls, "A local company poured some sinks for them, and they had problems with the seal, so we went down there and fixed up the sinks, met the owners, and they came out and saw what we did and expressed interest in having our products there. They've [now] sold more sinks for us than anyone. Its a lot of fun."

JSSC is currently involved in what Jagger says is one of the biggest jobs that they've ever done a 25,000-square-foot type job. "Its for commercial living loft-type apartments in California," Jagger explains, "Its all very exciting. A developer in Austin saw our stuff at the Design Center and he contacted me and wanted to meet about a table. He came out to our shop and saw all the stuff that we did. He likes working with local artists and wants something to set the units apart, so were doing 100 sinks and bar tops, its going to be a signature of the apartment."

In his spare time, Jagger likes to work on his self-proclaimed favorite project a barn that's part JSSC shop, part showroom and part living space. "We work on lots of projects, any small project that's done, we work on here," Jagger says. "We've just fixed up our place really nice. Its 2,500 square feet total. The bottom floor is like a garage, where we store a lot of our tools and materials, and its got a beautiful floor with a sun design. Upstairs we have our showroom, office, kitchen, my bedroom and bathroom."

"We also designed and did the driveway and its beautiful," he continues. "Its all stained. Its just a really nice feeling place. People that come out get a great appreciation for what we do, so it really helps us[so] we're not just showing our work through pictures."
