Hudson Concrete Corp.Manhattan's Door to Designer Concrete FlooringIn Long Island City, on the outskirts of New York City, Hudson Concrete Corp. offers their clients access to a creative team of colorists, designers and installers who work on projects that reach nationwide. Whether it's new construction or revitalizing existing concrete, Hudson produces designer concrete flooring of the highest quality of craftsmanship. On a wide variety of projects, Hudson utilizes the most innovative systems to create finished concrete surfaces that most often have a clean and modern aesthetic. Owner Paul Huneck, who attended graduate school at the Massachusetts College of Art before running his own business, stresses the importance his art background has played in forming his work with concrete. According to Hudson's website, "Coloring concrete is an art at Hudson. We work with liquid and powdered pigments to create custom colors and to skillfully color match. In addition, dyes, stains and broadcast pigments are tastefully used to impart color to the concrete surface." The company does a mix of residential and commercial work, but Huneck says his focus is primarily on commercial projects. Among Hudson's many retail clients is Abercrombie & Fitch, a youth-oriented clothing company, for which Huneck crafted concrete floors for several stores. He also installed flooring for Calvin Klein and Destination Maternity. The look Hudson's clientele prefers is natural concrete. "We create flooring that preserves the look of concrete. Many of our clients come to us for that authentic look," Huneck says. For a beach home in the Hamptons, Hudson provided floors that looked like concrete slabs. The authentic look was created using sealers that allow the concrete to show through. Says Huneck, "I try not to apply thick coatings and sealers to concrete, as it removes you from the realism of the material." The 1,100-square-foot living room and hallway that Hudson created had a plywood subfloor, so he says he used a self-leveling material over the wood before troweling down the concrete topping that was integrally colored. In addition to the floor, Hudson finished the fireplace wall with a concrete material (Hudson also offers vertical concrete applications). Hudson also played a role in transforming the appearance of a Wall Street office that had an existing concrete slab in the middle of a hardwood floor. He troweled concrete over the slab before dyeing it to give it movement, using blue solvent dye applied to create a mottled look. Adding that his clients appreciate realism, Huneck says that the New York esthetic is modern; grey and monochromatic, although many of their projects are colorful and innovative in their appearance. With Hudson performing 90 percent of their work in and around Manhattan, Huneck adds, "We're willing to go anywhere. I have a semi truck I will load. I send the driver and meet them at that destination, rather than shipping equipment." As their website explains, "We believe that working closely with our clients has enabled our success and continued our growth." That type of customer service explains why Hudson is at the top of everyone's decorative concrete contractor list in Manhattan and beyond.
