Alan Sparkman, CAE, LEED AP, CCPfExecutive Director, Tennessee Concrete Association
Alan grew up working in a family-owned ready mix business in Kentucky. Even before he received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Management from Mount Vernon Nazarene College, he had cast concrete pipe and septic tanks, and had gained experience in loader operations, truck driving, dispatching and batching concrete. After college, he moved up the corporate ladder, eventually becoming President of the family business. Along the way, Alan earned certifications from the National Ready Mixed Concrete Association as a Concrete Technician and as a Concrete Technologist. He also earned certification as an ACI Level 1 Field Testing Technician and Concrete Flatwork Technician, and was active in the Kentucky Ready Mixed Concrete Association, serving as President of that organization in 1988-89. In 1995, Alan joined The Aberdeen Group, merging his experience in the concrete industry with his long-time interest in computers and technology. Alan served as Director of Industry Relations for Aberdeen's Electronic Media Division until January of 1998, when he accepted his current position as Executive Director of the Tennessee Concrete Association (TCA). Alan maintains an active teaching and training schedule and has taught parts of the NRMCA Concrete Sales Professional program for California, Tennessee, Georgia, Kentucky, Indiana , Texas and New Jersey, as well as for the National Ready Mixed Concrete Association. In addition, he is an approved examiner for the ACI Flatwork Finisher program and is certified to teach the NCCER Wheels of Learning Concrete Craft Training. As a firm believer in lifelong learning, he completed his Masters of Business Administration degree in May of 2004 from Jones International University. In November of 2006, Alan became a LEED Accredited Professional through the U.S Green Building Council and in January of 2007 Alan earned his Certified Association Executive (CAE) designation, a certification earned by less than 5% of all association professionals. Also in 2007, Alan was in the first group to earn the designation of Certified Concrete Professional (CCPf) from the National Ready Mixed Concrete Association. Along with his duties at TCA, Alan serves as a director of the CIM Patrons, an industry group dedicated to the support and enrichment of the Concrete Industry Management Degree Program (www.mtsu.edu/~concrete) at Middle Tennessee State University. Alan serves on the Board of Directors and is the President-Elect for the Tennessee Society for Association Executives, as well as serving on the Board of Directors for the Tennessee Parks and Greenways Foundation. He is also active in his local church. In 2004, Alan organized the Count on Concrete Bike Ride Across America and helped raise over $47,000 from the concrete industry to fund grants to local trails projects in six states while highlighting the benefits of concrete, especially pervious concrete, in building environmentally sound projects. Tennessee received a $5,000 Count on Concrete grant to be applied to a rail trail near Ashland City in 2004. Alan was honored to receive one of the prestigious Kodak American Greenways Awards in 2004 for his efforts in making the bike ride a success. The 2005 edition of the Count on Concrete Bike Ride raised over $30,000 and will distribute grants to worthy projects in three states, including Tennessee, where Metro Davidson County Parks received a grant totaling $7,500 for work on the White's Creek Greenway.
