Full and Complete Communication The key to powerful teaching and leading

As a leader, have you ever had an experience like this? You've met with your staff and told them what you wanted them to do and by when you wanted it done. You did so in a way that you thought was clear, logical, and completely understandable. You asked the staff if they understood what they were to do, and they answered, "Yes." You ended the meeting, believing that what you requested would be done by when you asked for it.

That date comes and goes. No results. The staff meets with you and shows you what they have produced so far, and it's off the mark. "What in the world is wrong with these people?" you think. "I gave them simple instructions and a deadline, and they can't seem to do anything right...I should fire them all!"

Is this you? Let's take another look at this situation. Imagine for a moment that the results your staff produced are a reflection of the quality of your communication with them. In other words, what if YOU were accountable for the fact your staff did not produce what you wanted?

Guess what? You are accountable! As the leader of your business, your job is to teach your staff what you expect. How do you do that? Through full and complete communication! If your conversation did not produce the result you wanted, don't look over there at the staff. Look in the mirror! Ask yourself, "How can I communicate so that my staff is absolutely certain what I want and when I want it?"

The only way to be sure your communication has been successful is to ASK THE STAFF! Ask them to repeat what the assignment is, all the details you gave, and the due date. You will find out then what they didn't hear and where the gaps are in your communication. Remember, your staff can't read your mind. Your job is to teach them and then be sure they are clear about what you've taught!
