Conquering Complacency

I've talked to some clients that have been surprised recently by the mess that resulted from a team members complacency their lack of commitment, communication, energy, and direction, as well as their poor work quality. So what can you do to not be caught off guard and to fend off the swell of complacency that seems to be everywhere?

  • Be an example to your team of what it is to be unstoppable!

  • Talk to your team. You cannot assume anyone or anything, and make sure your team gets that they will be held accountable for doing what they say they are going to do, by-when they say they are going to do it.

  • Encourage your team to communicate with you what is going on in their worlds. If life for them is upside down for one reason or another and they arent clearing their minds of the distraction while they are on the job, it will have a dramatic effect on their performance in your behalf.

  • You need to be clear! If you dont have your head 100% in the game, you wont be able to recognize when others arent in the game either.

Complacency ultimately results from what we make up in our heads about what we do or dont want to do or being too tired or being overworked or the world and the people around us. Therefore, in order to keep complacency in ourselves and our teams at bay, we have to deal with our heads!!!

If your head has been down in the sand, it is time to pull it out and play! And it is time to ask your team to do the same. Teach your team what they need to know in order to recognize complacency in themselves and those around them. Get going! You dont have time to waste there are futures to create and what you dont know to discover, and while you are at it, why not have some fun too!
