Competition
is useful. It can be the key to your business success.
When there is a competitor around, you can distinguish yourself
for your customers. You pay more attention to what your customers
want.
Ever notice what happens to your local family-owned coffee shop
when Starbucks moves in down the street? Industry studies show
that not only do the small coffee shops survive, they thrive!
When a healthy competition is in place,
both businesses can generate results for the other.
Starbucks offers a set product that people want, and the
family-owned caf can then take advantage of that situation by
offering what Starbucks doesnt or cant. As W. Edwards Deming
once said, Competition should not be for a share of the
marketbut to expand the market."
When you have a competitor nipping at your heals, you avoid
falling into the sloppy kind of service that sometimes results
when you have no competitor and you slip into a sense of
entitlement way of thinking. In other words, the moment you begin
thinking you have sure customers, that can be the moment you
begin to lose thembut you wont notice it until its too late.
So dont shy away from competition. Realize that your competitors
can do a lot for you.
Instead of
staying up at night fretting about them, think like them. What
would be your competitors next strategic move against you? Plan
that move against your competitors instead! Be a problem-solver
rather than a problem-creator. Beat them to the punch, and pave
the way to success for all of you!
"A competitor
will find a way to win. Competitors take bad breaks and use them
to drive themselves just that much harder. Quitters take bad
breaks and use them as reasons to give up. It's all a matter of
pride." Nancy Lopez
