The Power of Being Your Word
Whats being your word all about? Being your word is being accountable for everything you have or dont have in your life. Its about who you are. Being your word sharpens your edge in life. Consider this: whenever you tell someone you will do something, and then you fail to be your word around that, what message does that send? The person youve disappointed feels like you dont value them enough to keep your word, and you feel lousy for failing to honor them and yourself! As a business person, you know that no one wants to do business with someone who cant be counted on. Businesses built on words from someone not being their word are worthless. Your word and reputation are a business asset. It is the intangible called goodwill. On the balance sheets of some publicly traded companies, you will see goodwill capitalized as a long-term asset and considered as part of the organizations net worth. Its up to you to build your organizations goodwill, no matter what size company you have. It makes good sense to honor yourself and your business by keeping your word. So do you want to harness the power of being your word?Treat your every word as a promise and practice keeping it! Start with promises to yourself. Keep them sacred no matter what! When dealing with others, be choosy about what you commit yourself to on their behalf. If you don't know when you can deliver on a project, be up front about it. Be specific. Are you giving an estimated time of completion or a guaranteed time? Yeah, right, you may be thinking. Ive been here before. And Ive broken my word more times than I can count. This may be so, but the fact iswe all make choices every moment of every day to do what we say we are going to do, or not. It is that simple. So are you going to be your word around your promises or are you going to break your promises? Suppose you do not honor your word. Well, another set of choices shows up. Now your choices are to either give up on yourself. or you can choose to renew your commitment to be the person who keeps your word, forgives yourself, and moves on. Just do it. Make a promise to yourself or to someone else. Give your word, and treat your word as sacred. Once you give your word, surrender to the fact you gave it, and manage your choices along the path to fulfilling what you declared. See what shows up when you honor the power of your word!
