Wood Decks

When to use wood
For above-ground pools, a wood deck is really your only option since it will have to be supported by piers. However, you will still need to use concrete for the footings. (For more information on building a wood pool deck, read this article from Popular Mechanics.) If you prefer the look and easy maintenance of a concrete deck, don't despair. It is possible to place a thin decorative concrete overlay over a wood surface.

When to use concrete
For in-ground pools, a concrete deck will give you the best overall performance, because it will last longer and require less maintenance.

Concrete offers unlimited design versatility. Concrete can be stamped, engraved, stenciled or textured to resemble natural stone or brick, and you can stain or color it any hue you desire.

With concrete you can create a safe, nonskid surface for wet feet. There are several ways to improve the traction of a concrete pool deck without detracting from the decorative appearance, such as using a textured or exposed aggregate finish. Read more about pool deck safety.

Installing a concrete patio rather than a wood deck saves lumber and eliminates the need for regular maintenance with solvent-based wood stains and sealers.

If you simply must have the look of real wood planking, then wood or a wood composite might be a good choice. Be aware, however, that you can stamp and color concrete to look just like wood planks, and the surface will last longer, be easier to maintain, and be less vulnerable to deterioration from exposure to harsh pool water chemicals.
