Will Concrete Countertops Stain?
Concrete countertops have sealers applied for water and stain resistance. (Left in its natural state, unsealed, concrete is porous and will stain.) Soupcan, on their website, notes that they add water conditioners to their countertop mix formulation which effects the capillary structure of the concrete itself. This makes the countertop less permeable and thus more stain resistant. Jeff Girard at Concrete Countertop Institute described how he tested his heavy-duty industrial grade sealer. He put vegetable oil with turmeric, balsamic vinegar, fresh blueberries, and mayonnaise, mustard, and ketchup on the countertop. He left these on the countertop for 100 hours. He cleaned up the mess and did not have any staining. (This is not a recommended practice.) Staining can occur if the sealer is compromised. (See: cutting on or setting hot pans on concrete countertops.) Simply inquire from your concrete countertop contractor how their countertops have been sealed and how the countertops resist staining.
