This finely crafted custom dream home, featured in the Grand Rapids, Mich., 2014 Fall Parade of Homes, offers picturesque views of the Thornapple River. Inspired by its surroundings, the home’s design displays a perfect blend of elements, including a metal roof, natural stone, warm wood finishes, and concrete countertops and vanities throughout.

“Our completion of concrete kitchen countertops for their son prompted the owners to ask that we cast many of the surfaces in their beautiful home using concrete. Their design aesthetic was one of clean lines, with an uncomplicated, relaxed feel, while preserving the views of the home’s exterior surroundings,” says Drew Bleeker of Hard Topix Precast Concrete.

The countertops and vanities reflect the clean, sophisticated look the homeowners were after. In the spacious great room and kitchen area, the counters were cast 1¾ inch thick in a soft twilight gray color. The L-shaped concrete island was fitted to join exquisitely with a walnut bartop to create a stunning, one-of-a-kind centerpiece. A complementing peripheral countertop with integral backsplash created a buffet-length serving and food preparation area with a view to the outdoors.

For the master bathroom, Hard Topix cast his and hers concrete vanities -- with wall-mounted faucets above each -- in the same twilight gray tone used in the kitchen. A custom 10-inch-tall concrete backsplash finished off the look. A matching 82 x 45½ inch concrete bathtub surround completes the space. In the guest powder room, a gray concrete vanity with an undermount sink rests on an open pedestal base and beautifully complements the rich antique brass finishes used in the space.

Hard Topix cast all the pieces using a proprietary glass-fiber-reinforced concrete mix colored with iron-oxide pigments. “This homeowner’s exquisite tastes allowed us to create simple, clean concrete designs to blend with the other natural design elements in the home,” says Bleeker.
