Success is Spelled Position

The experts in the retail business say the key to success in their business is location, location, location. In the construction industry, the key to success is market position, market position, market position. Position is everything. In essence it is: "There is no competition, I am the competition."

Position is attained by reputation.

Reputation: good name, esteem in which a person is held, creditability, character, of good repute.

If you are a builder, plumber or electrical contractor, masonry or concrete contractor or contractor servicing the utility industry, reputation in the market place is position.

Go to the yellow pages, turn to the section where your business is listed and count the firm which are in the same section competing against you. If you're not careful you can become discouraged. There are so many in relation to the available market. Some names drop out each year, but always new ones jump into the market. More names are added to the section every year.

As you scan the list of competitors, you know only a few are at the top, quite a few are clustered in the middle and a lot are drifting in and out at the bottom ranks.
