As you plan, keep in mind that most building codes require more than one exit from a living space in case of fire or other emergency. This is a good idea no matter how the basement is used. Secondary fire exits are mandatory if the space is used for sleeping. Three methods of providing secondary fire exits are (1) installing a prefabricated outside stairway to the basement (2) designing a second stairway into the basement or (3) enlarging the windows and adding a window well. You may also want to design an offset in the window well to act as a step.

When designing windows in the basement, pay special attention to the height from the floor to the window and the height form the well to the ground level. Check your local building codes to ensure your window wells meet local egress codes.

Sunlight has the magical ability to make people feel good. The use of sunlight can make your basement space look more natural. Daylight windows with window wells can be the same size as above grade windows, and can expand the space by letting in the outdoors.
Variations in basement lighting can set a space apart from the rest of the basement, giving it a distinct feeling or character. Built-in lighting in the stairway and recessed or track ceiling lighting can give an elegant, custom, well-designed look.
